Choose three of the following questions to answer fully. With each answer, you must include the downloaded image of the artifact that you are discussing, or you may create your own artifact.

Mao's Little Red Book
Why do I have to find these artifacts?
As a young girl, Ji-li was inundated with images and information from Mao and the Communist Party. After looking at these artifacts, it is easy to see why she supported Communism at the age of 12.

Artifacts from the Cultural Revolution

Use the provided links to help you answer the following questions. If the link doesn't help you, then try searching on your own.
1. Choose four quotes from Mao's Little Red Book. Write a response to those quotes in which you give an explanation of how they affected young readers and how they portray Mao's goals.

2. Why is it significant that Mao buttons were so popular. How many were created? Why is Mao turned only one way for the most part?

3.Read some of Mao's poetry. Analyze the poetry for meaning. What is he trying to say? How is he saying it?

4. Look at posters (five or six) from the Cultural Revolution. What theme is prevelant in them? What are some characteristics that they all seem to  share? How do they represent Communism? Mao?

5.Read lyrics from and listen to music from the Cultural Revoluion. What is a constant theme? Why would music be a good medium for these messages?

6. Find photos of five important people in Maoist China. Explain their impact.

7. Create a Da-zi-bao. Use Red Scarf Girl to get an undertanding of how to make one. Why were they used? How does this connect to Animal Farm or Lord of the Flies (if you have read these books)? How does the fact that the students could make one about their elders, including teachers, show a change from before the 1949 Revolution?
